Leon K. Baptiste, Principal of L B Electric Co., LLCemail:lbelectric@verizon.net phone: 973-565-0060 - http://www.lbelectricco.com/ Leon Baptiste, president of LB Electric, Newark, received an electrical engineering degree in 1991 from NJIT. He also participated in NJIT's Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), which helps minority students earn technological degrees and become engineers. Baptiste is educational chairman of the Metropolitan Electrical League, Long Valley, a non-profit group comprised of some 300 electrical companies. The League offers co-ops and scholarships to NJIT students who study electrical engineering or telecommunications.
LB Electric installed a 50-kilowatt solar-powered system on the roof of NJIT's new campus center. An array of 160 solar panels carpets the roof, converting sunlight into electrical currents. The panels provide power for the campus center and save the university $40,000 a year in electrical bills. NJIT also received a $215,000 rebate from the N.J. Board of Public Utilities to offset the cost of installing the system.
The solar-powered system prevents 100,000 pounds of carbon dioxide a year from being released into the air. That's how much carbon dioxide would issue from a coal-burning power plant had NJIT not installed the panels. The panels also prevent the release of nitrogen oxide and mercury, two other byproducts of a coal-burning power plant.
"NJIT's solar-unit is the most advanced in the state," said Baptiste, the engineer who installed the system. Baptiste, of Roxbury, mounted 144 of the framed panels onto the roof. He added 16 upright solar trackers, which rotate in line with the path of the sun to absorb maximum sunlight. The panels, framed with aluminum and stainless steel, can withstand the sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The solar panels, which have a 25-year warranty from distributor TurtlEnergy, Linden, also protect the roof from the ravages of weather and UV radiation. The solar panels have a silicon surface laced with photovoltaic (PV) cells, said Baptiste. PV cells are devices that convert sunlight to electricity, bypassing mechanical generators. PV stands for photo (light) and voltaic (electricity), whereby sunlight photons free electrons from the silicon surface. When photons from the sun's rays hit the silicon surface of a solar cell, they are absorbed by the electron of the silicon atom. The supercharged electron now has enough kinetic energy to leave the host atom. The solar cell collects the stream of liberated electrons on its surface, thereby creating a direct current (DC). The DC is fed into an inverter and changed into an alternating current (AC), which when connected to an electric panel, generates electrical power. Inside the campus center lobby stands a kiosk whose computer screen displays the amount of energy saved by the panels. Since the system was installed last August, the monitor shows that enough energy has been saved to "to power 510 houses in one day," or "enough energy to make 500,000 cups of coffee." The monitor also shows that the panels have prevented 68 pounds of nitrogen oxides and 20,000 pounds of carbon dioxide from being released into the air. "It's the best solar-electric array I've seen," said Baptiste. "It should be a model for other universities, and businesses, across the state. Solar electricity saves NJIT and taxpayers money while also preserving the environment. It's a win-win for all." Back To Top ^ |

Randy Harmon, Co-founder of Foundations Business Development Groupemail:randygharmon@aol.com phone: 908-754-3652 - http://www.foundationsbusiness.com For the past 12 years Randy Harmon has counseled and consulted with science, technology, and Internet entrepreneurs assisting them in commercializing their new technologies, and in financing and building their businesses. He helps entrepreneurs develop business models, plans and strategies that can enable them to successfully move their technology out of the lab or home and into the marketplace.
Randy is also an expert on the sources of grants and capital, as well as strategies for financing a sci/tech business. He knows the funding requirements of investors and government loan programs and works to help clients meet them. He has helped clients secure government SBIR/STTR R&D grants, state loans, venture capital and investments from high net worth individuals often referred to as angels. Randy has a reputation for being a tireless champion of entrepreneurs and for doing all that he can to help them move their ventures ahead.
The two biggest challenges that promising young growth businesses typically face during their early stages are a lack of financing and even more important the absence of a management team. The typical sci/tech business is founded by one or more scientists, or technical professionals with little or no formal business training and experience. They have great technology but are often unable to turn it into a business themselves and are likely to fail without experienced business help. They often fail to realize from the start that business development and marketing expertise are a separate skill set as important to the success of their business as the technology. Our goal is to help bridge this gap and to bring our clients to the place where they are able to access the resources necessary to build an effective business management team that will speed their development and increase their prospects for success.
Randy Harmon serves as the Director of Technology Commercialization for the New Jersey Small Business Development Centers (NJSBDC) of Rutgers Business School. He managed the Rutgers Technology Business Incubator in New Brunswick from 1995 until 2001.
Randy holds a BS degree from Cornell University and a MBA degree from Rutgers. He is active within New Jersey's entrepreneur community and sits on the board of the New Jersey Entrepreneurial Network. Randy makes frequent presentations on launching, financing and growing science and technology-based businesses. He has also written several articles on various aspects of technology commercialization and is referenced regularly in regional newspaper articles and business publications. Back To Top ^ | |

Dr. Shihab Kuran, President & CEO of Petra Solar phone: 732.379.5566 - http://www.petrasolar.com Dr. Kuran's experience is in the general Electronics/Semiconductors industries where he has assumed various technical and executive positions at private and public companies.
His passion is in the clean tech space and his goal in life is to help solve the world's energy and water problems. A world where everyone has access to clean, sustainable energy and water resources is doable. It just takes a serious commitment to make it happen.
On the clean water front, he has co-developed a new and unique technology that applies semiconductors/electronics for water desalination and decontamination. This technology is based on Capacitive Deionization. It is energy efficient and relies heavily on semiconductors for its operation. Cross pollinating the semiconductors and water desalination fields has yielded magnificent results. Dr. Kuran founded Sanabelle Water to commercialize these innovations.
On the clean energy front, he co-founded Petra Solar which is a VC backed startup that is focused on reducing the cost of installed photovoltaic (PV) systems by up to 50%. Along with his co-founders he brings a wealth of experience in the electronics and semiconductors areas to the PV market. Petra's products simplify PV systems and make them easy to install while increasing their efficiency and reliability.
If you too believe in a world where clean, sustainable energy and water resources should be available for all, Dr. Kuran invites you to contact him to help make this dream a reality.
