Mr. Roger Brooks, Manager, Commercialization and Cluster Support of Maine Technology Institute

Roger Brooks joined the Maine Technology Institute in February 2008 to manage their Cluster Initiative and Commercialization Support Programs. This second program aims to advance commercialization success among MTI funded companies including helping them access outside capital. Prior to joining MTI, Roger spent more than 25 years with a variety of technology companies, including serving as CEO of Intelligent Controls, Saco, Maine, and President of Dynisco, Inc., Sharon, Mass. He is a co-founder of Exeter, N.H. based Abierto Networks, a dial-up and serial to IP solutions provider for POS and ATM payment systems, and serves as their Chairman and Treasurer. Roger also serves on several small business boards and was the lead independent director at Moldflow Corporation (MFLO), a provider of CAE software to the plastic injection molding industry, up until the time it was sold to Autodesk (ADSK) in 2008. His experience also includes private equity and he is a member of the Maine Angels network.

Roger holds an undergraduate degree in economics and government from the University of Connecticut and a master's degree in business administration from the New York University Stern School of Business. He lives in Cumberland with his wife, Elizabeth. They have four grown children and five grandchildren.


Mr. John Burns, Fund Manager of Small Enterprise Growth Fund

John has served as Fund Manager of the Small Enterprise Growth Fund (SEGF), a venture capital fund serving Maine based companies, since 2000. John's responsibilities include the full range of venture industry activities, from marketing to deal generation to investment analysis, due diligence, company monitoring and support, and the development of exit strategies. He is also responsible for maintaining a strong relationship with the Small Enterprise Growth Board, the Governor's office, and the Legislature.

John holds an MBA, with high distinction, from Babson College, a MS degree in resource economics from Penn State University, and a BS from the University of Maine. He served as Second Vice President and Portfolio Manager for UNUM Corporation, where he managed domestic and international portfolios. He holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation, and has held the Series 7 NASD license.

Jim Damicis is founder and president of PolicyOne Research. Jim has more than 20 years experience in economic and business development and public policy research and analysis. With PolicyOne, Jim has worked for numerous states, regions, and communities on evaluation and strategy development for their economic development and industry support efforts. Jim currently is responsible for evaluating all of Maine's research and development programs for the Maine Office of Innovation and economic development programs for the Maine Department of Economic and Community development. He was a principal investigator on an "Assessment of Maine's Industry Clusters" in 2008. Prior to starting his own business, Jim worked for two-and-a-half years for the Maine Science and Technology Foundation, MSTF as the Director of Research and Policy. While at MSTF Jim was responsible for building the Foundation's public policy research capacity with the intent of fostering the state's technology-based economic development. Prior to his positions at MSTF Jim worked for five-years as a consultant for Planning Decisions providing research and analysis for economic and community development. Jim began his career as the research director for the Maine Municipal Association providing research and analysis for the state's 492 municipalities.

Jim has earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics and Political Science from the University of Connecticut, Storrs, and a Master of Arts in Public Policy and Administration from the Edmund S. Muskie School of Public Service at the University of Southern Maine.
   
Dr. Amy J. Davidoff, Professor of Pharmacology of University of New England

Expertise: Cardiovascular physiology, pathophysiology and pharmacology, with particular emphasis on diabetes and heart failure.

General Research: My laboratory focuses on the cellular mechanisms contributing to development of diabetic cardiomyopathy (i.e., heart disease with diabetes). We are investigating the cellular signaling pathways which contribute to abnormal heart function and impaired insulin signaling.

Current Research: Evaluating the pathogenesis of heart failure associated with diabetes; assessing the cellular consequences of elevated sugar and fats on isolated heart muscle cells, primarily focusing on excitation-contraction coupling and insulin signaling; studying interventions which can prevent or reverse heart disease associated with diabetes.

Dr. Elizabeth Ehrenfeld, Professor of Southern Maine Community College

Elizabeth Ehrenfeld has been teaching at SMCC since the fall of 2001. She holds a Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Michigan and a BA in Biological Sciences from Cornell University. Dr. Ehrenfeld lived in Switzerland for 5 years doing post-doctoral work in bacterial genetics at the University of Geneva Medical School, and the Nestle corporate research center. She moved to Maine to work for IDEXX Laboratories where she developed diagnostic tests for the food industry. She has written numerous scientific papers, and has several patents on detection of bacteria in drinking water and food. She is a founding member of Mainely Women in Science, and currently serves on the board of the Biotech Association of Maine. She is also a member of the Maine Board of Environmental Protection.

Outside of the scientific world, Dr. Ehrenfeld is a Registered Maine Guide who enjoys many outdoor pursuits, including sea kayaking, cross-country skiing, and hiking. Dr. Ehrenfeld is a past President of Portland Trails, and currently serves on the Advisory Board of the Appalachian Mountain Club.


Mr. Phil Ferneau, Managing Director of Borealis Ventures

Phil Ferneau is co-founder and managing director of Borealis Ventures, a NH-based venture capital firm investing in early stage software, Internet and mobile media, and technology commercialization opportunities in Northern New England and beyond. He has led Borealis' investments in Adimab, Avedro, Bar Harbor Biotechnology, FetchDog, GlycoFi (acquired by Merck & Co.), and Medical Metrx Solutions (acquired by AIG Altaris).

Prior to launching Borealis, Phil was the founding executive director of the Center for Private Equity and Entrepreneurship at Dartmouth College's Tuck School of Business. He remains an adjunct professor at Tuck, teaching venture capital and entrepreneurship topics. He also is a Fellow of the Dartmouth Entrepreneurial Network and a board director of the Dartmouth Regional Technology Center.

Phil previously held senior strategy and business development roles at an application software company in New Hampshire, where he co-authored Balancing the Corporate Scorecard: An Interactive Simulation (Harvard Business School Publishing, 1998). He began his career in private legal practice in Washington, D.C., where he counseled technology startups, Fortune 500 companies and foreign governments on sensitive trade, tax, and investment matters.

Phil received an A.B. degree from Dartmouth College, a J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law and a M.B.A. from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth (Tuck Scholar with High Distinction).

Gregory S. Fryer has practiced corporate and securities law for more than 25 years. Before moving to Maine in 1985 to head Verrill Dana's securities practice, he practiced law in New York (Chadbourne & Parke) and Atlanta (McKenna, Long & Aldridge).

Greg is former Chair of the Business Law section of the Maine State Bar Association and, since 1993, has served as Chair of its Securities Law subcommittee. He was actively involved in the Bar Committee responsible for drafting the new Maine Business Corporation Act and related forms, and chaired the Bar Committee that reviewed and commented on the new Maine Uniform Securities Act.

Greg's principal areas of practice include corporate law, mergers and acquisitions, public and private offerings of securities, SEC regulation and reporting, and venture capital. He has advised a number of different corporations on antitakeover matters and dealing with dissident shareholders. He has represented the target or bidder in every tender offer involving publicly-held corporations in Maine since 1986.

Over the years, Greg has served as securities counsel to numerous public companies, including Hannaford Bros. Co., Maine Public Service Company, North East Insurance Company, Intelligent Controls, The One Bancorp, and ImmuCell Corporation. In the capacity of special counsel, he has also prepared various SEC filings by UNUM, CertainTeed/Saint-Gobain, American Maize-Products, Bangor-Hydro Electric, Great Northern Nekoosa, Shaw's Supermarkets, Bar Harbor Bankshares, and Timberland Co.

Greg also has extensive experience in venture capital transactions. He has served as lead counsel to either the investors or the portfolio company in connection with investments by the following venture capital and private equity firms: Ampersand Ventures, Cardinal Partners, Canaan Equity, CHK Capital Partners, Coastal Ventures, Corning Capital, FdG, Internet Capital Group, Katahdin Securities, Kestrel Venture Management, Launch Momentum, Little Diamond Island Enterprises, the Maine Small Enterprise Growth Board, Masthead Venture Partners, McKernan Enterprises, Redhills Ventures, Salix Ventures, Tribal Assets Management, Village Ventures, and Windy Point Capital.

Mr. Gary Goodrich, President of Biotechnology Association of Maine and President of Bioprocessing Inc.

A BAM member since 1998, standing board member and officer since 2003. He organized State of Maine Pavilions at the International BIO convention in 2006 and 2007. Founded by Gary in 1990, Bioprocessing manufactures diagnostic raw materials used in tests for the diagnosis and management of cancer. Gary has over 30 years of diverse biotechnology related industrial experience including cancer research, clinical lab work and management, biochemical industry R&D, and diagnostic reagent development and manufacturing. He holds an MBS in Clinical Chemistry from Northeastern University and a BS in Biochemistry from the University of Vermont. He also holds an ASCP (SC) certification as a technologist in Chemistry.
   
Dr. Jody Jellison, Professor of University of Maine

Dr. Jellison is a professor of biological sciences, a cooperating professor of microbiology, and a cooperating professor of forest ecosystem sciences at the University of Maine.

Her laboratory focuses on the physiology, molecular biology and ecology of wood degrading fungi. We work primarily with the brown rot fungi. These organisms are an important component of nutrient cycling in coniferous forests and are economically significant because of their ability to attack and degrade wood products. Brown rot fungi are also potentially of interest in biotechnological applications including bioremediation and bioproducts design.

She has a Ph.D. from Oregon State University.

Mr. Todd Keiller
Technology Affairs, Maine Medical Center


Mr. Keiller brings 34 years of licensing, business development, and marketing experience. He has worked for 16 years in the industrial sector in a variety of sales, marketing, and business development roles, 10 of which were with Corning Glass Works in their Science and Medical Products Divisions. He has over 18 years of academic licensing experience and is the former Vice President, Ventures of the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. He currently manages the technology transfer activities for Maine Medical Center, the University of Vermont, Caritas St. Elizabeth's Medical Center of Boston, and Boston Biomedical Research Institute. He is also assisting, through the Center for Law and Innovation, other non profit institutions in Maine with their technology transfer activity. He is currently serving on the Board of the Biotechnology Association of Maine, President of the Center for Innovation in Biotechnology in Maine, is a Special Advisor to the Vermont Center for Emerging Technologies, and is a former Director for the Massachusetts Association of Technology Transfer. Todd holds an AB from Dartmouth College and an MBA from the Tuck School of Business Administration.

Mark joined the Boston office of Square 1 Bank in February 2009 to build a program for pre-venture startup companies called Square Roots. By combining startup-focused banking services with extensive early stage domain expertise, Square Roots plays a key role in the entrepreneurial ecosystem and leverages the bank's nationwide network of venture relationships to help its companies raise capital. Prior to joining Square 1, Mark was a manager in the New Ventures group at Boston University, where he assisted faculty and students to launch university spin-out companies. From concept to incorporation, Mark mentored projects and assisted with all aspects of venture creation including strategy development, business plan development, management recruitment, seed funding, and formal launch. Earlier in his career, he was an Associate Licensing Officer in the MIT Technology Licensing Office, supporting the patenting and commercialization of inventions across several scientific disciplines. He also served as TLO liaison to the judging panel of the MIT $100K Entrepreneurship Competition. Mark received his BS in Mechanical Engineering and a MS in Management of Technology from the University of New Hampshire. He recently returned to UNH as a Lecturer in the Whittemore School of Business, teaching Managerial Decision Making in the MBA program.

Mr. Joseph Migliaccio, Business Innovation Team Manager

Joe joined MTI in 2000 and is the manager of the business innovation team, which covers the Seed Grant, Development Award, Accelerated Commercialization Fund and Federal Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR/STTR) support programs. Involved with a series of family-owned small business throughout his life, he also worked in the commercial shellfish industry while earning his undergraduate degree. During 10 years at IDEXX Laboratories in Westbrook, Maine, he worked in commercial assay development for veterinary R&D, served as a supervisor of global technical product support and a product-line manager with responsibility for line strategy, expansion, customer satisfaction, and achievement of contribution goals. He has formal and practical training in immunology, bioassay and product development. Joe attended the University of Maine, initially focusing on engineering, and obtained a bachelor's degree in biology from the University of Southern Maine. He holds a master's degree in business administration from Southern New Hampshire University. Joe lives in Freeport with his wife and children, where they own a small business and he serves on the town council and economic development corporation board of directors.

Dr. Heather G. Miller, Consultant

Dr. Heather Miller consults with CORE on the development of research grants and projects. Dr. Miller received a bachelor's degree from Connecticut College and earned master's and doctoral degrees from George Washington University. Dr. Miller spent more than a decade at the NIH, working as a program officer at NIAID, the AIDS coordinator at NIAAA, the Women's Health Advisor and Director of the Office of Policy, Planning, and Evaluation at NCCAM, and as the Senior Advisor to the Deputy Director for Extramural Research in the Office of the Director of NIH. At the Research Triangle Institute, she was the Director of the Health and Behavior Measurement Program where she conducted NIH-supported research and served on several NIH review groups. Dr. Miller also worked at the National Research Council, at the Institute of Medicine and the National Academy of Sciences where she wrote two book-length reports on AIDS. She has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals.

Dr. Ah-Kau Ng

Ah-Kau Ng received his Ph.D. in Microbiology & Immunology from Temple University in 1975 and postdoctoral training at National Cancer Institute (1975-78). He was an assistant member at Scripps Clinic Research Foundation (1978-81) and an assistant/associate professor at Columbia University (1981-88). He is a professor (1988-present) and was the chair (1990-2003) of Department of Applied Medical Science at University of Southern Maine.

Mr. Donald W. Perkins, President

Don Perkins became GMRI's President in 1995. Don works with GMRI's board of directors and management team to drive GMRI's evolution as a strategic science, education, community institution serving the Gulf of Maine bioregion. Don brings an unusual mix of private sector and not-profit sector experience to GMRI. Prior to joining GMRI, he instructed at the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School, directed the Marine Conservation Corps in California, served as a financial advisor to Native American tribes; and managed the operations of Binax, Inc. Don has been active in the marine policy arena on multiple levels. He served on the boards of the Gulf of Maine Council on the Marine Environment, the Maine Department of Marine Resources Advisory Council, and the Maine Legislature's Task Force on the Development of Aquaculture. He was co-founder of Friends of Casco Bay. He currently serves on the boards of the Maine Marine Research Coalition, Gulf of Maine Lobster Foundation, Gulf of Maine Ocean Observing System, and Westbrook School Board. Don was born in Waterville, Maine and has lived in a variety of Maine's coastal and inland communities. Don and his wife are raising their family in Westbrook. Don holds a B.A. in Anthropology from Dartmouth College and a M.B.A. from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business. His greatest sources of pleasure are his family and an early run and dip on Crescent Beach.


Dr. Catherine Renault, Director

Dr. Catherine Renault joined the Maine Office of Innovation in January 2007. She has more than 16 years experience in innovation-driven economic development. Prior to joining OOI, Dr. Renault served as a project manager for RTI International, a think tank based in Research Triangle Park, N.C., and as a senior research associate in the office of economic development at the University of North Carolina where she co-authored the evaluation of Maine's research and development sector. Dr. Renault brings with her a wealth of experience and knowledge, having worked in economic development in North Carolina's research triangle for several years. She has also served as managing director for the Virginia Center for Innovative Technology where she was a member of the team that added almost 16,000 jobs, more than 250 new companies and more than $1.9 billion in new sales and capital in four years. Dr. Renault holds a B.A. from Harvard University and an MBA from the University of Virginia. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Mary Secor is the Program Coordinator for Outreach at the National Collegiate Inventors & Innovators Alliance (NCIIA).  She is responsible for the development and implementation of entrepreneur education programs, such as the national Invention to Venture (I2V) workshops.  Ms. Secor also works with NCIIA members and strategic partners to promote invention, innovation, and entrepreneurship in higher education   Mary Secor has over nineteen years of experience in higher education as an educator, advisor, program director, administrator, and consultant and has presented at national conferences on topics related to student learning, retention, engagement and performance.

David Shaw's career has combined business leadership, government and community service, strategy consulting and investment management. David is Executive Chairman of Ikaria., a specialty pharmaceutical company, founder and retired CEO of IDEXX Laboratories, and has also been a director and/or founder of numerous high technology companies including IDEXX, Cytyc Corporation, Ikaria, Microbia, Fetch, Magen BioSciences and others. Recently David has served on the faculty of Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government, the advisory board of the school's Center for Public Leadership and the selection committee for America's Best Leaders. He has been a senior advisor to New Mountain Capital, Chair of The Jackson Laboratory, a member of the Executive Committee of the US-Israel Science and Technology Commission, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, a member of YPO and CEO, an advisor within the State of Maine executive department, a trustee of Maine Medical Center, Hurricane Island Outward Bound and other non-profits. David also serves as Managing Partner of Black Point Group, a private investment partnership, and Partner at Venrock Associates, a venture capital firm.


Dr. Graham Shimmield, President and Executive Director

Graham Shimmield graduated from the University of Durham in Geology, and received a Ph.D. in Marine Geochemistry from the University of Edinburgh in 1985, where he remained until 1996 as part of the academic staff. He then became the combined director of Scottish Association of Marine Science (SAMS) and the NERC-funded Institute, within the Dunstaffnage Marine Laboratory (DML). Graham's particular interest is in marine geochemistry, which includes the fundamental studies of geochemical processes operating in oceans through identifying indicators of ocean and climate change, and examining human impacts and contamination in coastal and deep seas. In this context he has studied the environmental impact of off shore oil installations and their decommissioning. Currently he is chairman of the Shetland Oil Terminal Environmental Advisory Group (SOTEAG). In 2000, Graham was awarded the title of Honorary Professor at the University of St Andrews. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and the Institute of Biology. He has been president and is currently vice-president of the new European Federation of Marine Science and Technology Societies (EFMS). Currently, he is Chairman of the European Census of Marine Life Program. He joined Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences in 2008.


Mr. Jeffrey A. Thaler, Co-chair

Jeff Thaler, a senior member of Bernstein Shur's Energy, Environmental, and Litigation Practice Groups, has a wide-ranging practice that includes environmental and energy permitting, compliance, enforcement and litigation, as well as litigation for clients with commercial, medical and legal disputes, insurance coverage, personal injury, or toxic tort problems. In his state and federal environmental and energy practices, Jeff has been permitting counsel for wind and hydro power, LNG, and wood-to-biofuel, as well as for many other development projects; he also is involved in ocean energy and windpower matters. Jeff also represents clients on compliance and enforcement related matters. His clients are based all over the country. Jeff is the lead author of The Maine Environmental Law Handbook, and has taught environmental law at Maine Law School. He also serves as co-chair of the Environmental and Energy Technology Council of Maine. Jeff has a BA from Williams College, magna cum laude with highest honors, 1974, and a JD from Yale University School of Law, 1977.

As VP of Science, John Wilbanks runs the Science Commons project at Creative Commons. He came to Creative Commons from a Fellowship at the World Wide Web Consortium in Semantic Web for Life Sciences. Previously, he founded and led to acquisition Incellico, a bioinformatics company that built semantic graph networks for use in pharmaceutical research & development. Previously, John was the first Assistant Director at the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard Law School and also worked in US politics as a legislative aide to U.S. Representative Fortney (Pete) Stark. John holds a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Tulane University and studied modern letters at the Universite de Paris IV (La Sorbonne). He was a research affiliate at the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory in the project on Mathematics and Computation. John also serves on the Advisory Boards of the U.S. National Library of Medicine's PubMed Central, the Open Knowledge Foundation, the Open Knowledge Definition, and the International Advisory Board of the Prix Ars Electronica's Digital Communities awards. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Fedora Commons digital repository organization.
