Andrew Clapp, Partner of Brook Venture Partners

PERSONAL & EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
My hometown is Springfield, Massachusetts. I attended Clarkson University, initially majoring in Physics but graduating with a hybrid engineering/business degree after I discovered that I preferred the management of technology to engineering. I received my MBA from Amos Tuck at Dartmouth College. There we were steeped in the use of the computer, which has served me very well over the years.
EXPERIENCE
Upon graduation I joined General Electric, and within five years I had formed my own investment banking and consulting firm. However I realized that I needed more corporate level experience so in 1978 I joined Arthur D. Little, then the largest consulting firm in the world, followed by Equifax, one of the largest information companies in the country. Concurrently I launched a company that published two newsletters, a yearbook and a directory, all focusing on mergers & acquisitions. I sold the company to Securities Data (Thompson Publishing) in 1989.
In 1987 I joined Downer & Co. where I became a partner and launched their sell-side practice, focusing on the sale of U.S. companies to European buyers. They did the very first financing for Staples, a $4 million private placement. While there I became interested in private equity investing, arranged a couple of financings, and left Downer to launch Gateway Financial Group after a one-year stopover at Shields & Co. That same year, an attorney who shared my interest in private equity introduced me to Fred Morris. We teamed up and Fred and I made a number of investments, leading a group of investors we organized for that purpose. In 1998 we co-founded Brook Venture Fund which has become our primary investing vehicle.
I've led and participated in many seminars and conferences on M&A and venture capital, and currently sit on the boards of Texterity, Affordable Interior Systems, Linton Truss Company, and Universal Software
